Project, Program, and Portfolio Management

What is a project?  A project is a sequence of complex, connected, unique activities that have a shared purpose or goal and that has to be completed within a specific budget, by a specific time and in accordance with specifications.

What is a program?  A program is a collection of connected projects.  Often the projects have to be completed in a certain order.  Because of the multiple projects, programs are larger in scope than a single project.  Programs can have many goals, unlike projects.

What is a portfolio?  It is a collection of projects that share a common link and should be managed together.

What is Portfolio Management (in regard to projects versus financial)?  Once a common link is established, followed by a strategy for the portfolio, management of the portfolio is done to ensure ongoing evaluation/monitoring of performance, prioritization adjustment, and that objectives are completed.

Portfolio management is continual, and the cycle consists of establishment, evaluation, prioritization, selection, and management.
